WNBAスーパースターが収入について赤裸々に語る
2019年、女子サッカー米国代表が男子代表と同等の賃金や待遇を求めて米国サッカー連盟を相手に訴訟を起こしたと話題になりましたが、男女格差はサッカー界だけにとどまりません。2019-2020シーズン、WNBAの選手の給与は平均年収が$75K(約815万円) に対し、NBAの選手は平均年収が$6.9M(約7億5千万円) とその差は歴然です。この事から、半分以上のWNBAの選手はオフシーズン中に海外のチームと契約し、選手を続行。中にはWNBAの給与の15倍以上を稼ぐプレーヤーもいます。

2020年1月、WNBAは労使協定 (Collective Bargaining Agreement) 締結に合意したことを発表しました。この新しい協定では基本給だけでなく各大会の賞金、ボーナス等の報酬支払額を53%上昇、また、試合間の移動や育児手当ての改善も見込まれています。この発表はバスケット界にとって、また女性アスリートを取り巻く環境において、非常に大きな一歩であり、ここから少しずつスポーツ界における男女格差が縮まっていくことを期待しましょう。

This is a clip from “The Tea” Episode 3: “Equitable Treatment”. Some women athletes are talking about women fighting for more pay and to be treated equally. In 2019, the United States Women’s National Soccer Team sued the United States Soccer Federation for gender discrimination. This type of gender discrimination is not only in the soccer industry, but also in other sports. A famous WNBA player, Breanna Stewart is talking about the differences in salary she has experienced playing in the WNBA and playing in Russia. For the 2019-2020 season, the average NBA player salary was $6.9M for the season, while the average WNBA player salary was just $75K. More than half of WNBA players play overseas during the offseason in order to earn extra money. In January 2020, the WNBA established a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The new CBA is poised to provide major improvements in pay and benefits to WNBA players, including provisions for maternity leave and a new performance bonus structure. This is a positive step towards addressing some of the gender inequities in basketball, but more needs to be done in the WNBA and sports in general.
